Eh, mainstream emo is annoying and very whiny for the most part. It's mostly skinny little guys who wear sweaters and horn-rimmed glasses. Think Dashboard Confessional.
I don't know if I'd call it "power pop" or not because I'm not certain of the definition of it. Maybe because the stuff I listen to doesn't really have a "power" feeling to it...most of the emo stuff I like is sad, acoustic, cry in your beer type music.
One emo/indie singer I like a lot would be Bright Eyes. I think his lyrics are really introspective and real, and his voice is very sad and pained.
I like his song "Something Vague" but I absolutely love the lyrics to "A Song to Pass the Time" because it reminds me of living out in the middle of nowhere with really empty-looking people and wondering if it's worth it.
