At one point in my life if I heard a heavy diesel engine chugging at idle outside my window, I would think "Hmm. Fire truck? Tow truck? Something is afoot!" and go outside to look.

Now I automatically think "Soccer mom in a 6 liter diesel dualie crew-cab pickup". And I'm always right.

Diesel ownerz represent!

//The gas is not cheaper in socal
Yes, it is. Right now as much as $.10/gal cheaper. At the height of post 9-11 price gouging, the price for diesel fuel hovered somewhere between those of the two lowest gas grades. Currently, it's cheaper than all of them.
//you have to hunt around a little more for gas
eh. So you can't buy at Arco. BFD.
//as far as I know diesel engines in trucks don't last any longer then regular engines
You would be incorrect there, too.

They require less maintenence, and less intensive maintenence. A less complicated ingnition structure = less things that can stop the engine if they break. The fuel is not flammable at normal atmospheric pressure. There are less cancerous emissions, and practically no greenhouse gasses in the emissions - my car is 20 years old and is never required to have a smog check. And I do not know for sure whether the Diesel versions of some big-ass dually gets better mileage than the gas version, but I would be tempeted to suppose so...

And you're right: only in SoCal...
