It's been a county fair thing in the States for at least 20 years. Maybe only regionally at first. I don't think there's a thing they won't fry and dust with powdered sugar.
I haven't been to the Wisconsin State Fair in over 10 years, but I don't remember that. I do, however, remember the flavored whole milk stands, the fluffy cream puffs, and the deep-fried cheese balls... MMMmmmm...
