Comic Con was a blast. There were lots of nerds there, including us. I only bought one thing (a bob the angry flower book). [livejournal.com profile] fimmtiu and [livejournal.com profile] redmaenad and [livejournal.com profile] zebulon_y and I went from one end of the nerdiverse to the other many times and saw uncounted mouth-breathers, inappropriate fedoras, Pink Floyd t-shirts, and people dressed as video game characters.

A street hustler had got hold of a pass and was trying a variation on the Gas Station Pitch: "I gotta buy this collectable ITEM upstairs and I am SEVEN DOLLARS SHORT could you spare me a BUCK or TWO?"

One of the seller booths thought it would be smart to offer recent Star Wars material on bootleg DVD for sale. They were last seen with their stuff all tarped over and guys with bad cop hair talking to them.

I got to meet both of Zeb's brothers and some friends of theirs, and also the famous Nancy[i] and her fiancé, and Zeb's friend Leora. All of whom were cool people.

It was great seeing [livejournal.com profile] fimmtiu again; it had been five years! I stuffed him with Mexican food at Taco Mesa the night he arrived and then we got to horse around all day at the con. Put him on a plane to Salt Lake (ow!) this morning.

I have a cold; pity me. Fortunately I didn't descend into strep or flu yesterday, probably because I drank from the firehose all day. I also now have the pager for my job for a week, which means no life. But heck, I had a great day off.

When I'm not so exhausted by tiny, tiny creatures eating my throat I'll write more about the con and the things it made us think about.

I'm going tomorrow, and I'm excited about the cosplay possibilities! Nevermind that I live 20 minutes from the convention center, this is the first time I've gone. It had become a tradition for me to make plans to go and then have everything fall through on me. I almost feel like I should flake out, for tradition's sake.

The cosplayers better be out in force for my amusement.

You know a Leora? I thought those only existed in Sinclair Lewis!

Did you attend any panels? I didn't go, but my favorite moments from two years ago were the panels. Also running into Glenn Danzig on the floor.

Yeah, five bloody years. It's hard to believe, given that we're always in near-constant communication via IRC, LJ, and IM. You're welcome in the Great White North anytime you can make it; I'll ply you with okonomiyaki until you see double!

What ever happened to the guy that did the comic Cerabus? I read all the books up until the mid-90's and never knew if he finished the series in 2000.

He did finish it, but...

He went

He went <a href="http://www.tcj.com/234/n_sim.html>unpleasantly insane</a>. The full story is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Sim">here</a>.

Sim also complained that women are only able to communicate ideas by telling allegorical stories, often involving animals -- apparently unalarmed that he has made a living doing exactly that for the last 30 years.

Oh my. Poor guy. You know, there was a time that he had a woman friend and seemed on top of the world, then... All I remember is it ended badly and I think that began his slow sink into the woman-hating crazies. Poor, poor Sims...

I never followed the letters all that much. I read mostly the "phone books" so I could really get involved with the various stories but stopped after Mothers and Daughters. I should see if I can find any copies of the rest of the series someday, but sounds like I'd be disappointed.

Thanks for the link!
