In theory I can see my friends list with protected entries and everything in my news reader (NetNewsWire), when I pass it a magic incantation that passes the cookie to Livejournal that I set in my web browser.

In theory.

In practice, it fails silently. Anyone else got this to work?

I never even bothered with this setup and just use a generic public-post-only URL (http://www.livejournal.com/customview.cgi?user=brianenigma&styleid=225596, if you are interested). Things may be different now, but at the time I set it up, the only way to see protected entries was to pass your username and password in as plaintext parameters to the URL, which seemed less than desirable based on the HTTP proxy at work and the number of public access points I frequent.

The flip side to that public access point thing is that EtherPeg is quite interesting and fun.

By "fails silently," do you mean no entries at all, or just not the public entries? Do you get anything interesting (and xmllint-able or RSS validator friendly) if you download the URL with wget?
