Some waste of space got my CC number and tried to buy an HP laptop with it. Transaction went through (almost $1400) but then HP caught it, reversed it, and called me. Thank you, HP. Bank also had flagged it as suspicious was on their way to the phone so to speak.

So now I have to change my CC# and a million other things but it looks like I'm not out $1400, which is pretty cool since there wasn't that much in the account anyway.

What no one can tell me is what to do if I want law enforcement to hunt this creature down and kill it. I guess I'll start with the local police.

They're wise not to give me the contact information for Mr. Loser, though. There are some things worse than being arrested for credit card fraud.

Yeah, talk to the local police. My town's police log in the newspaper is full of reports of CC fraud and "theft by check".

Local police, they take the report and report it to the credit fraud or internet fraud division, then detectives eat donuts and investigate, and arrest people. Then those people go to jail and get buff and eat tacos.

A similar creature tried to snatch up my identity a few years ago and almost succeeded in purchasing a computer on credit through HP in my name -- it was their fraud department that caught an inconsistency and called me to confirm that the purchase was one I was intending to make. Thank God *some*one is on the ball. But GOOD LUCK getting the cops to help you. There are thousands of new cases of identity theft every day and they just can't even keep up.

I'm sure glad you don't need to pay for that loser's computer, though.

earlier i was discussing with some compatriots the possible use of an SATA HDD and a tube sock ... it strikes me as an appropriately ironic tool

As it happens, I believe there is a new federal body that deals with that kind of thing. What it''s called and if it's active I can't say.

At least they could have bought an iBook or a ThinkPad

Local PD is the way to go, but don't expect much to happen.

You just reminded me to sign up for one of those credit report checker things. Transunion does it for $15 a quarter if you want to check it quarterly.
