Maybe I am missing something here, but even lack of depth perception says there is still a wall there. Maybe just a little farther away.

Your right - it's a combination of a wide angle making the wall look flatter plus how the photo is cropped so the window or hole the guys are aiming for (like the break in the wall in the background) is removed, thus creating the illusion of shooting at a solid wall.
