If you go in Modify Journal, you can turn off individual userpics for communities (checkbox thang about halfway down), but I don't know if it works for friends lists and stuff. You can try it, anyhoo!
you need to have a paid account, but you can modify styles and make your own styles. just removing friends icon on your friends page is really simple-- you just remove the img tag & code
