Pan pan, pan pan, pan pan. This is United States Coast Guard station Long Beach with an urgent marine bulletin. The United States Coast Guard has received a report of a 28 foot pleasure craft named "What, Me Worry?" overdue on arrival from Catalina Island to San Pedro. All vessels are requested to keep lookout and render assistance as needed. This is United States Coast Guard station Long Beach, OUT.

As I recall, when mariners actually use it, it supposed to be for things like mechanical problems like a engine dies or your sails tear or a mast falls over... you use "Mayday" for actual life threatening emergencies like someone on board is having a heart attack or a giant squid is trying to eat Kirk Douglas on your main deck...

The U.S. Coast Guard adopted the use of pan-pan many years ago as an attention getter for the beginning of all "urgency marine broadcasts," which would include BOLOs for overdue vessels...
