It was this neat country where, unlike many other places, no national I.D. card was possible, because its freedom-loving inhabitants wouldn't tolerate anything more invasive than a driver license.

Anyway that's over with: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000243042581/

I don't know why they don't just go ahead and implant chips in our foreheads, or maybe UPC bar codes on the back of our necks, like on the show "Dark Angel". Why waste all this time and money on the damned cards, when it's the chips we're headed for anyway? Nothing to lose that way, no card to have to keep up with, just a simple visit to a mobile 'doctor', get that 'shot', you know, to prevent against the 'bid flu' or some such, nudge nudge wink wink, and then we're all microchipped, easy peasy.

I bet they make the cards totally customizable. I want mine all black and scary with a Fraktur font.

The best part, of course, is that there's no way these things will be secure in any way. Maybe I should be a stainless steel rat and go into I.D. theft full-time.

I'm sure everyone will be free to chose which of the mandatory Crying Eagles Nevar Fogret 9/11 Terri Schiavo Pro-Life messages they will have on their card.

My gag reflex might not be so good.

Yeah, I have been dreading this. I have been "not tolerating" various such invasions for a while now, but this is the big nasty. Guess it's time for me to start getting seriously inconvenienced.

I'm flying to the USA soon and I notice that tickets there now carry a "September 11" surcharge. Funny, I don't remember ordering any September 11s.
