I was always confused by "do they know it's Christmas any way". As in, why should this matter? Until I realized that what he meant was that they were benighted nonwhite nonwestern non-Christian kiddies who were missing out on the perfect neo-Dickens Christmas that all us WASPs take for granted and it was our obligation as wealthy Christians to BRING IT TO THEM.
