have you driven a car with a big block(*) in it? oodles of low end torque is a lot of fun.


(*) this and most of the other crate motors in production aren't true big blocks -- they are bored and stroke small blocks, with big block displacements.

Yeah, I've felt that torque. Those are the cars of my childhood! And they were loads of fun.

Big displacement low-tech 70s style engines like that are a march into the past, though. You can do so much more with less now, and trying to stay in a "retro" permanent 1970 forever feels like an admission of defeat on the part of the U.S. auto industry.

But yeah. Vroom.

You have to admit that the new engine in the Corvette Z06 is pretty impressive, it puts out 505hp with a 7.0 litre displacement and gets 27mpg on the freeway. All for 65k... not bad considering the 0-60 of 3.6 and a rev limited topspeed of 197.
